Wellness Center puts me back on track!
In 2002, I returned to live in Virginia. This was where I grew up. I attended high school, college, and graduate school, married, raised my family, learned and practiced my profession in this state. I finished my last few working years out of state, then came back to retire among family and life-time friends here.
Living away had been good in very many ways. I had learned new things. I had made new friends. I gained invaluable experience. I brought back with me some memories I will always cherish.
I also brought back something not so good. While I lived away, I had acquired a bad back.
My life, over all, had been reasonably active with no particular physical demands. Work and family each had its share of stresses, but I was blessed with faith and great companions when I had to face those. I very rarely did anything that seemed likely to abuse or injure my body. I guess I just figured that old age was catching up with me.
Every now and then, during those years before retiring, for no reason I could understand, all of a sudden I was in real pain. It would be agonizing to get out of bed, to walk, to bend over, or to stand up from sitting in a chair. The pain came on with no warning and for no reason I could figure out. A couple of times each year, it would just hit me. When it did, it put my life on hold for about a week. Pain killers only managed to take away a little of the focus on how bad I hurt. That trade-off was not a good thing for me. Feeling dumb and numb while I was side-lined by pain was not how I wanted to grow old.
Not long after I was settled back into Chesapeake, I had another one of those episodes. Somebody suggested that I see a chiropractor. Dr. Mark Gutekunst’s office was in my neighborhood. I dragged myself through his door. I could just say, And that’s the end of this story but, to tell the truth, it really was the beginning of something even better than solving my problem with back pain.
Dr. Mark spent our first hour together sharing one of my favorite pursuits: he taught me and helped me learn. He explained. He answered my questions about what had been going on with my back. He made sense about what could be done to fix it. He gave me reason to think that we could do a whole lot more than just suffer old age.
The best part is that WE started right then to do it TOGETHER. Since that first visit, I have enjoyed regular appointments with him. Dr. Mark accurately diagnosed, treated, and relieved my symptoms in those early days. Since then, he has set an admirable personal example, suggested beneficial exercise, made recommendations about my diet, encouraged me to take better care of myself than I knew how to do before, and kept a regular, hands-on watch over my back. I have come to consider him and his staff as a valuable part of my life-maintenance routine and good friends in the bargain.
These days now, I do not have any of the old week-long times out that used to take me down. In fact, back pain has become a rare thing for me. When a discomfort does hit me, a quick visit to Chesapeake Wellness Center puts me back on track in short order. If my back or my retirement schedule needs adjustment, they cheerfully work me in.
I recommend this guy and his practice. Highly.
